How an EICR Works – Step by Step
An EICR involves inspecting and testing your electrical installation to check for faults, wear, or dangers. Here’s a breakdown of my process to give you an idea of what to expect:
1️⃣ Initial Consultation
We discuss the inspection upfront, including any power interruptions. I’ll ask about your setup, like bonding locations for water/gas, outbuildings, or past issues, to plan effectively.
2️⃣ Visual Inspection at the Meter Box
Starting at the meter, I check the fuse, earthing, meter tails, and signs of damage or overheating.
3️⃣ Consumer Unit Check
I examine the fuse board for loose connections, incorrect breakers, or overheating. A common issue is missing RCD protection on circuits like bathrooms or buried cables—if absent, it’s a fail.
4️⃣ Main Bonding Verification
I inspect earth connections for water and gas pipes (often under the sink or near the meter). Missing bonding is a frequent fail point.
5️⃣ Reviewing DIY or Additional Setups
Any unsafe modifications, like improper extensions or wiring, get flagged for safety.
6️⃣ Solar or Special Systems
If you have solar panels, I check for proper isolators and RCDs to ensure compliance.
Common Fail Reasons
❌ No RCD protection where needed.
👎 Unsafe DIY work.
🫣 Missing main bonding.
⚠️ Outdated or overloaded consumer units.
After the inspection, you’ll get a full report with codes (e.g., C1 for immediate dangers, C2 for potential risks). If fixes are needed, I can quote for those too.
